JARBOE - Mahakali - 2008

Jarboe is best known for being the lead singer of the legendary Swans from New York during their 14 years career. After their split, she turned to a prolyphic solo career where she actually expresses her infinite creativity.

I personnally only discovered her hypnotizing voice lately in 2003 with her amazing split-collaboration with Neurosis.

Mahakali is her last full-lenght to date.
Featuring some great guests like Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down...) and Attila Csihar (Mayhem...).

Let yourself fall into her world. Follow her voice.
This is essential.

"Mahakali is an epithet of Kali, the Hindu goddess representing, among other things, death and destruction. It seems an appropriate choice for an artist whose work, though often beautiful, has continuously pushed the boundaries of extreme music, both in her solo work and her collaborations with such artists as Neurosis and Jesu's Justin K. Broadrick. With Mahakali, she explores not only the more destructive aspects of the titular Hindu goddess but also apocalyptic imagery from Christian and Gnostic texts, and the eclectic but intense musical backing - not to mention a pair of surprising guest vocalists - are a good match to both her grim lyrics and her always expressive vocal work. Impressive, and at over 70 minutes long, somewhat exhausting, Mahakali proves that Jarboe's work is just as intense and brutal when she turns outward as when she burrows into her own wounds. As she continues to grow as a solo artist, she moves further and further away from accessibility, but her work only becomes more astounding to those with the fortitude to not only listen to it, but understand it."

I think that, if you follow my place, Neurosis needs no introduction to you. Anyway here is just a short presentation for those who need it : Neurosis are just one of the most influential bands in Doom/Post Hardcore since the late 80's.

So, here is what happens when Jarboe meets Neurosis.
A pure sonic boom.
Dark and cold.
Disturbing.

"I tell ya, if God wants to take me he will… he’s coming… With those words, one of the most sinister and disturbing CDs I’ve ever heard begins its hour-long passage. This album is the result of a collaboration between Jarboe of the Swans on vocals and Neurosis as her backing band. The music is unmistakably Neurosis, but the vocals and lyrics of Jarboe, make this a whole new animal, a disturbed animal. I tell ya, if God wants to take me he will… with a touch of his cold hands… Her voice is ominous, fragile, scared, and frightening all at once..."
